Skipping Day – Shrove Tuesday – Foreshore, Scarborough
Do you remember skipping with a rope as a child? This tradition is alive and well in Scarborough particularly on Shrove Tuesday – or skipping day as known locally. The origins of ‘skipping day’ date back more than 150 years and there are two theories behind it. The first and probably the more widely believed is that fishermen gave their damaged ropes to local children when sorting their nets and ropes, the alternative being an older tradition known as ‘Ball day’ which was a public holiday and locals would take their games andskipping ropes down to the Foreshore. Perhaps the truth is a combination of the two. So lets help keep this great tradition going and join in the festivities this Shrove Tuesday, 13th February 2024 – and don’t forget you skipping rope.
